Some very interesting research has been done examining somatic causes of tinnitus.    In the book “Tinnitus: Theory and Management” by James Byron Snow, research studies and case studies are reviewed on somatic effects on tinnitus.  For example, jaw movements or putting pressure on the TMJ joint were observed to affect tinnitus volume.  In fact, a very high percentage of tinnitus sufferers were able to modulate their tinnitus by somatic maneuvers.  Try it yourself.  Place your hands on your forehead and then push your head forward with force.  However, keep your head steady with a backward force by your hands.  Notice how your tinnitus level fluctuates.  My tinnitus level definitely increased with this procedure.

Studies even showed that tinnitus perception could be elicited in 60% of people with no clinical tinnitus by somatic testing.  So, a strong link between somatic (mainly head and neck) factors and tinnitus seems to really exist.

Given that muscle tension could increase my tinnitus, I tested the converse.  Could muscle relaxation of the head and neck reduce my tinnitus?  Sure enough, moist heat application several times a day to my jaw and neck areas resulted in reduction of my tinnitus.  Over a period of two weeks, I was able to keep the level down, but I have seen an increase back to near normal levels lately.  One possible reason for this is the difficulty in keeping up with the repeated moist heat applications through the day.  I just could not keep it going.  I will need to experiment with this some more.  Try it yourself and post your results.

I do believe that my tinnitus is connected with the problems I have with my neck although both doc and ENT specialist says no. I have very tight muscles in my neck and it cracks and somethimes sticks in an awkward position. It started before the tinnitus. Also i have noticed that when I clench my teeth the T gets louder. Thanks for starting this site.

Thank you for your post.  Given that you state that you have tight muscles in the neck, I would try moist heat treatment to the relevant areas.  Also, muscle massage is a good idea.  Try it several times a day for several days and see what happens.

I have experienced excellent results using Cranio-Sacral therapy. I did not believe in the theory, but after 4 treatments my tinnitus diminished considerably. It didn't stop completely,
but the sound lowered to the point where it didn't bother me. (I used to halt a conversation by saying 'Wait until the plane takes off!") I stopped the treatments to see how long it would work, and it was only after about a month that the tinnitus came back. I would recommend it as very much worth a try! (Possible in conjunction with accupuncture.)

Hi Jay,

I would back you up on the effectiveness of craniosacral therapy. I an a therapist and I see a lot of good results with people suffering from tinnitus. I would also advise it, Catherine, for helping your neck problems and that might also help with tinnitus. I would also suggest some relaxation and meditation exercises, as well as all over body muscle relaxation exercises. Often we find that people have general muscle tightness which can make a person very tense and this can agravate the tinnitus.
I wish you all a speedy recovery from your situations

My tinnitus started with a feeling of my ears being plugged (like in the mountains during elevation), then progressed to a feeling in my face and scalp of pressure, and then full pitched high level 24 hour a day tinnitus.  I've seen my family doctor and coerced my way into an ENT specialist, both say there is nothing there and seem quite unconcerned.  I took myself to a physiotherapist who helped with exercises and heat (through the use of warmed up beeswax between plastic layers) unfortunately I got laid off and couldn't continue because of the cost.  I did discover that the loudness can be lowered.  On my own I've discovered that laying on the "other" side of my body, using a very firm pillow, and tucking a firm U-shaped pillow under the curved side of my neck while I sleep results in a lower level of tinnitus in the morning.  If I go back to my usual (and most comfortable) side to sleep on my tinnitus comes back full blown and very loud.  I've gone from a noise level of 10 24/7 in the beginning, to 18 months later a noise level of 2-3 and occasionally 1 on most days, however, somedays for no reason apparent to me it will sore back up to a 6-7.  Some days I think I'm going insane, it's changed who I am, I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
