my tinnitus has escalated to almost unbearable as of late.  i am a 31 yr old male, with a long history of hearing loss.  severe in the high frequencies, but yet, i've heard this damn ringing in my ears for years.  i've tried all the remedies.  for some reason i notice lately that no matter how bad the tinnitus is at the given moment, it's barely recognizable when i'm taking a shower.  why is this?  am i more relaxed? is it the sound of the water?  or the exhaust fan?  or a combination of them all?  all of yous please pay more attention when you're in the shower...does your tinnitus wash away?

Yeah, I think that most tinnitus sufferers know that being in the shower helps "wash" the tinnitus away.  I have seen jokes on other tinnitus boards about how an inventor of a "shower cap", a hat or cap that plays shower noise, would make a lot of money.

I believe that it is just basic masking that is taking place.  Stress reduction could play a small part too.

Hey Bdagz, Sorry to hear about yur ringin. I have the same thing. Listened to music TOO LOUD for TOO LONG. The shower helps me too, but don't know if it's because I'm relaxed with no one yacking in my ears or if it is actually helping. As soon as I get out of shower, my ears are blaring. I live in NYC so it is always loud. Sometimes when the ringin is bad I put warm water on cotton balls and shove um in my ears. Helps me go to sleep.

from what yous are saying, i'm going to to go with the idea that the "ring free" effect in the shower is caused by both basic masking along with a splash of stress reduction also.  but i am curious as to why the shower masks the ringing so well, while other things such as music or tv or anything else for that matter simply do not.  katienyc i am from queens and am currently on long island.  definitely relish when theres nobody yakking in my ears.  i don't like yakkers & tend to just space out when i'm around one.  just saw TSO at radio city not too long ago.  i love my music loud too. i take ambien to help me sleep, but i'm afraid thats a whole different post.  use whatever works for you...cotton, plugs, headphones.  mr. anonymous i appreciate your input.  i am fairly new at this online posting thing but i can guarantee you i will check out some other tinnitus boards for more advice.  hope you all had a nice holiday and good luck with this...

Wow, I didn't think anyone was going to reply to me. Thanks! I am a Trans convert. A friend took me to one of their concerts last year in Rochester. It was amazing. Now they have a permanent place on my iPod. What is your favorite song/album? I couldn't hear for two days after the show. The lights alone were awesome. So, what made you move from Queens to Long Island. I couldn't imagine doing that. I am a city girl all the way. Do you ever get into the city?
