On the flip side, the down-side to these medications are many.  Dependence and tolerance are two big issues.  Others include tiredness and memory problems.  Getting off a benzo is not easy for many people, especially after taking higher doses for longer periods of time.

My experience with benzos has been with Klonopin (clonazepam is the generic).  I started taking Klonopin due to panic attacks and anxiety.  So, I was already on a benzo when my tinnitus started.  Today, I am only on a very low dose of Klonopin as my panic and anxiety problems have been controlled mostly with Zoloft.

Tapering down on the Klonopin has been a tedious and somewhat difficult process for me.  But in the end, it is worth it to either get off the medication or to reduce the dose to as low as possible.

What have been your experiences?

My Doctor prescribed lorazepam for me, for anxiety (some it tinnitus related). He never hesitates to refill the script, but I rarely take the "1 tablet twice a day" he prescribed. Basically, I used it in times of extreme distress (I just didn't want to rely on a pill for my state of mind, so left it as a last resort). During a recent appointment for an ear infection, we discussed my tinnitus (he tries awfully hard for a primary care physician. He's gone out of his way to learn more about tinnitus to help me, I think). He asked how often I was taking the Lorazepem & I told him only in "emergencies". He shook his head & explained that the dose & frequency he prescribed should also help a little with tinnitus. So today is the first day I took one pill in the morning, and one in the evening. With an ear infection that had my left ear screaming yesterday, my tinnitus is a dull hiss at 3 am (usually the worst time for me). COuld be a coinicidence, but I felt it worth reporting. BTW, even my sporadic use of lorazepam has an effect on my tinnitus, often taking the shrill elements out of it, and sometimes reducing the volume.

I agree with the Huckleberry, the previous poster. Benzo's for emergency use do work. Xanax XR 0.5 works well, but these drugs are highly addictive if used every day. I would never use them daily, as I'm currently dependent on them for another medical issuue, and trying to withdraw. I'd rather deal with the tinnitus than the torture of withdrawing from a benzo. Yes, they can work in an emergency, but please don't use them daily no matter what a Dr says. If you look on the internet Benzo support groups you will find users that never had tinnitus until they started withdrawing from a benzo, and for some the tinnitus has never left.

mandie:

Used xanax for anxiety and tinnitus for two years - did not notice it helped.  The withdrawals almost killed me - now I use if for emergencies only -

some have reported a reduction in tinnitus and some relief.

I have moderate hearing loss and studies show people like me do not respond well to psycho level drugs for tinnitus -
